A heart transplant removes a damaged or diseased heart and replaces it with a healthy one. The healthy heart comes from a donor who has died. It is the last resort for people with heart failure when all other treatments have failed. The heart failure might have been caused by coronary heart disease, damaged heart valves or heart muscles, congenital heart defects, or viral infections of the heart. Featuring contributions from leaders in the fields of heart failure, cardiac transplantation, cardiac pathology, and cardiovascular molecular research, Congestive Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation is a valuable compendium for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, researchers, trainees, and : Hardcover.

Presents several new chapters including: Medical and Surgical Alternatives to Cardiac Transplantation (Ch. 8), Living Related Lung Transplantation (Ch. 43), Lung Pathology (Ch. 28), Immunosuppressive Therapy in the 21st Century (Ch. 48), and Management of Congestive Heart Failure in the 21st Century (Ch. 49). Heart failure (HF) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. It is only second to pancreatic cancer with the shortest life expectancy.

It plagues millions of people every year. Currently, over 5 million people have an HF diagnosis, and that number is only expected to rise in the future.

Advanced heart failure or stage D disease affects >10% of the heart. Transplantation should only proceed at centres with medical and surgical experience with ACHD and transplantation including cardiologists with expertise in ACHD, HF, ACHD surgeons, anaesthesia, transplant medicine and a MCS program.

8 Predicting life expectancy in patients with ACHD is more difficult than in other categories of patients presenting for heart transplantation. Adult indications. The international society of heart and lung transplantation (ISHLT) registry data shows idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) was the most common indication followed by congenital heart disease (CHD) and cystic fibrosis (CF) in (n=) ().The data from the most recent period from to June of (n=), however, shows that CHD became.

An extensive literature search on MEDLINE and PubMed yielded only 7 reports of chylothorax after isolated heart or combined heart/lung transplant [1–5].

A summary of these reports, including the present case, is provided in Table 1. Four cases occurred after heart transplant and four after combined heart/lung transplantation.

A heart–lung transplant is a procedure carried out to replace both heart and lungs in a single operation. Due to a shortage of suitable donors and due to the fact that both heart and lung have to be transplanted together, it is a rare procedure; only about a hundred such.

The appropriate selection of lung transplant recipients is an important determinant of outcomes. This consensus document is an update of the recipient selection guidelines published in The Pulmonary Council of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) organized a Wri.
